This project is led by Principal Investigator Yasuyuki Kawahigashi (RIKEN iTHEMS), together with three research groups headed by Sub-Project Leaders Akira Furusaki (RIKEN CEMS) and Bartosz Regula (RIKEN RQC). A mathematics group specializing in operator algebras, a condensed matter physics group specializing in topological phases, and a quantum information group specializing in quantum resource theory work together toward a unified theory of quantum information under noise.

Yasuyuki Kawahigashi | iTHEMS

Specializes in the theory of operator algebras and its applications to mathematical physics. Received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1989 and subsequently worked at the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, the University of Tokyo. From 1991-1992 he was a postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley under Vaughan Jones, who founded quantum topology and received the Fields Medal for this work. His research on two-dimensional conformal field theory earned him the Spring Prize of the Mathematical Society of Japan; he has given an invited lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians and is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. The 35 PhD students and 24 postdocs he has mentored are now active in 12 and 10 countries, respectively. Deputy Director, RIKEN iTHEMS since 2025.
